Exam pattern of Goethe Institut B1
German B1 exam pattern is simple and easy to clear. There are 4 parts to the Goethe Institut B1 examination:
- Lesen (reading)
- Hören (listening)
- Schreiben (writing)
- Sprechen (speaking)
One must get 60% in every part, in order to pass that part.
Let us discuss all the modules one by one:
Lesen (reading):
Total time: 65 Minutes
Total marks: 30
Teil 1 (6 marks): A text with 6 statements (Right or Wrong)
Teil 2 (6 marks): 2 texts with 3 questions each (Multiple Choice Questions: a, b, or c)
Teil 3 (7 marks): 7 Statements with 10 Advertisements
Teil 4 (7 marks): 7 comments from 7 different persons on some topic.
Teil 5 (4 marks): A text with 4 questions (Multiple Choice Questions: a, b, or c)
Teil 1 (6 marks):
You read an email with 6 statements. Every statement has 2 options: True and False. You read the email and cross the right option for every statement.
Teil 2 (6 marks):
You see 2 texts and every text has 3 incomplete statements, thus a total of 6 incomplete statements. Every statement has 3 options: a, b, and c. You read the text and cross the right option for every statement.
Teil 3 (7 marks):
You see 10 advertisements and 7 statements stating the wish or purposes of 7 different persons. You need to understand their wishes and select the right advertisement for every person. For one person, there is no advertisement.
Teil 4 (7 marks):
You read 6 comments from 6 different persons regarding one common topic. After reading, you need to decide, which person is for the topic and which person is against the topic.
Teil 5 (4 marks):
You read an information table regarding the rules and regulations of an organization and 4 incomplete statements with 3 options: a, b, and c. After reading the table, select the right option for every statement.
Hören (listening):
Total time: 40 Minutes
Total marks: 30
Teil 1 (10 marks): 5 small dialogs with 10 Questions: 5 questions with Right or Wrong, 5 questions with options a, b and c
Teil 2 (5 marks): 1 Audio (Monolog) 5 questions with options a, b and c
Teil 3 (7 marks): 1 Conversation with 7 Questions with Right or Wrong
Teil 4 (8 marks): one Radio interview with 2 guests and one moderator with 7 Questions with options a, b and c
Teil 1:
You listen to 5 small texts. For every text, there are two questions, one question with options right and wrong and another question with 3 options: a, b, and c. After listening to the text, you cross the right option. You listen to these texts two times.
Teil 2:
You listen to a text. This text has 5 questions with 3 options each: a, b, and c. After listening to the text, you cross the right option. You listen to this text only once.
Teil 3:
You listen to a text. This text has 7 questions with 2 options: Right and Wrong. After listening to the conversations, you cross the right option. You listen to these conversations only once.
Teil 4:
You listen to a radio interview. In the interview, there are 2 guests and one moderator. This text has 7 questions with 3 options each: a, b, and c. After listening to the text, you cross the right option. You listen to this text two times.
Total time: 60 Minutes
Total marks: 100
Teil 1 (40 marks): informal E-Mail writing
Teil 2 (40 marks): comment writing
Teil 3 (20 marks): formal E-Mail writing
Teil 1: You write an informal mail to your friend telling about an event, in which he did not take part in.
Teil 2: You read a message on an online platform and then you write your comment on that message. About 80 words.
Teil 2: You write a formal mail. About 40 words.
Sprechen (speaking):
Total time: 15 Minutes
Total marks: 100
Teil 1 (28 marks): planning an event with your partner
Teil 2 (40 marks): presenting on a topic
Teil 3 (16 marks): putting a question to the presentation of your partner.
16 Marks for Pronunciation
Teil 1: You and your partner will plan an event and decide the details of the event. For the planning, you have around 3 minutes.
Teil 2: You will be given 2 topics and you select one of them. Then you will present the topic for almost 3 minutes.
Teil 3: After the presentation, you need to ask your partner one question regarding the presentation. Your partner will do the same after your presentation.
