How to prepare for TestAS?

The TestAS (Test for Academic Studies) is a standardized test used by German universities to assess the academic suitability of international students. Here’s a breakdown of how to prepare for it:

1. Understand the Test Format:

  • Core Module: This is the mandatory part, testing general academic skills like:
    • Solving quantitative problems: This group of tasks tests your numerical thinking and your ability to solve mathematical problems. You will be presented with practice-related text tasks that you have to solve using elementary arithmetic operations.
    • Inferring relations: These tasks test logical and analytical thinking. Each question consists of two pairs of words. Two of the four words are missing, and you are to identify the matching words so that both pairs of words have an analogous relationship. This involves logical thinking in the linguistic area. You recognise meanings, generalise and abstract to form rules, and substantiate these to supplement the missing terms.
    • Completing patterns:This group of tasks measures the ability to recognise and complete visual patterns and structures. The tasks include identifying shapes, continuing patterns and recognising symmetries and transformations without any prior linguistic or technical knowledge. Your task is to fill in the missing geometric figure in the last field.
    • Continuing numerical series:This part tests the ability to recognise and continue numerical patterns. The tasks include identifying patterns in number sequences and predicting the next elements in the sequence. Knowledge of the four basic arithmetic operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division – is sufficient to solve the tasks.
  • Subject Module: This is specific to your chosen field of study (e.g., Humanities, Cultural Studies and Social Sciences, Engineering,  Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences and Economics). It tests your knowledge and skills relevant to that field.

2. Gather Preparation Materials:

  • Official TestAS Website: The official website (testas.de) provides valuable resources like sample questions, information about the test format, and registration details.
  • Practice Tests: Look for official or reputable practice tests to simulate the exam experience.
  • Study Guides: Consider using study guides or textbooks specifically designed for TestAS preparation.

3. Develop a Study Plan:

  • Create a Schedule: Allocate specific time slots for studying each section of the test.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Break down your preparation into smaller, achievable goals.
  • Regular Review: Regularly review the material you’ve covered to reinforce your learning.

4. Focus on Key Areas:

  • Core Module:
    • Verbal Comprehension: Improve your reading speed and comprehension, expand your vocabulary, and practice grammar exercises.
    • Logical Reasoning: Practice solving puzzles, analyzing arguments, and identifying patterns.
    • Quantitative Reasoning: Review basic mathematical concepts, practice problem-solving, and improve your data interpretation skills.
  • Subject Module:
    • Review Relevant Concepts: Refresh your knowledge of key concepts and theories related to your chosen field.
    • Practice Subject-Specific Skills: Practice solving problems and answering questions related to your field of study.

5. Improve German/English Language Skills:

  • Language Proficiency: Ensure you have a strong command of the language (German or English) in which the test is conducted.
  • Practice Reading and Writing: Regularly read academic texts and practice writing essays or summaries.

6. Test-Taking Strategies:

  • Time Management: Practice pacing yourself during practice tests to ensure you have enough time for each section.
  • Read Instructions Carefully: Pay close attention to the instructions for each question to avoid making mistakes.
  • Guess Intelligently: If you’re unsure of an answer, eliminate obviously incorrect options and make an educated guess.
  • Stay Calm and Focused: Manage your stress levels during the exam by practicing relaxation techniques and maintaining a positive attitude.

7. Consider Professional Help:

  • Test Preparation Courses: If you feel you need extra support, consider enrolling in a TestAS preparation course.
  • Tutors: A tutor can provide personalized guidance and address your specific weaknesses.

Remember, consistent effort and a well-structured study plan are key to successful TestAS preparation. Good luck!
